Why would I use a design service when the company supplying the products will do the design for “free” ?

No system can be truly free. Just like in other businesses, the costs for supplying a complete design are “built into” the quotation. The other issue is that the supplier will be attempting their best to supply equipment that they buy at a favorable rate, or have a close working relationship with. This is very biased and potentially limiting. For example, large security system providers will require long term monitoring contracts to place their equipment in at “no charge”. These systems are designed with cost containment in mind and you may not get best design possible. They may also be limiting with proprietary software designed to keep a customer “locked in” for several years with their proposed security components. Expensive software upgrades an be hidden and resurface in years 2 and beyond. It is best to separate the recommendations from the potential vendor. In this manner, costs can come down during a competitive bid process and the management of this process can be handed by our company.

What is an example of an integrated, intelligent security system?

Imagine a camera positioned to monitor an area leading to a secure area or entrance. Up until very recently, this camera would have to be monitored by a human being. This person would then have to initiate a series of steps to minimize the threat. In the new world, this camera would have “intelligence” built in and ultimately be connected to a network. If an intrusion is detected, the camera can send a signal through the network to alert the appropriate person/s. Some even have the capability of “following” the subject automatically. This type of technology can cut down the expensive labor costs associated with a person viewing video screens and reduce costly false alarm rates. Furthermore, with advances in wireless technologies, it is no longer necessary to “hard wire” the connections. This allows a better preservation of buildings and can negate the need for expensive trenching and placement of wire…thereby saving great cost! In some cases, power can even be supplied by solar energy. Solar and wireless systems cannot solve all design issues, but it is becoming a viable solution in many challenging environments.
