Why would I use a design service when the company supplying the products will do the design for “free” ?
No system can be truly free. Just like in other businesses, the costs for supplying a complete design are “built into” the quotation. The other issue is that the supplier will be attempting their best to supply equipment that they buy at a favorable rate, or have a close working relationship with. This is very biased and potentially limiting. For example, large security system providers will require long term monitoring contracts to place their equipment in at “no charge”. These systems are designed with cost containment in mind and you may not get best design possible. They may also be limiting with proprietary software designed to keep a customer “locked in” for several years with their proposed security components. Expensive software upgrades an be hidden and resurface in years 2 and beyond. It is best to separate the recommendations from the potential vendor. In this manner, costs can come down during a competitive bid process and the management of this process can be handed by our company.
What is an example of an integrated, intelligent security system?
Imagine a camera positioned to monitor an area leading to a secure area or entrance. Up until very recently, this camera would have to be monitored by a human being. This person would then have to initiate a series of steps to minimize the threat. In the new world, this camera would have “intelligence” built in and ultimately be connected to a network. If an intrusion is detected, the camera can send a signal through the network to alert the appropriate person/s. Some even have the capability of “following” the subject automatically. This type of technology can cut down the expensive labor costs associated with a person viewing video screens and reduce costly false alarm rates. Furthermore, with advances in wireless technologies, it is no longer necessary to “hard wire” the connections. This allows a better preservation of buildings and can negate the need for expensive trenching and placement of wire…thereby saving great cost! In some cases, power can even be supplied by solar energy. Solar and wireless systems cannot solve all design issues, but it is becoming a viable solution in many challenging environments.
What does security integration consist of?
True electronic security system integration is one in which all systems “talk” together to bring about the most complete operational picture. Systems such as video, intrusion and access control can, and should be, merged into a single platform for optimum performance. If an area is violated, these systems allow the correct person/s to be notified with minimal false alarm nuisances. Further, images and date can be transported anywhere, anytime to those folks who are authorized to see them. This includes verification that can potentially be viewed on a cell phone or PDA.
Why is Secure Protection Design so qualified to design these systems?
In today’s world, there are many folks who claim to be able to design intricate security systems. Many are good. However, few have the necessary disciplines of designing systems capable of residing on a network, practical investigative experience and protection experience like we do. This experience is real life and not confined to just one area of expertise. True security system design is a comprehensive picture. It should not be confined to just procuring the correct equipment. It must be effective with all consequences addressed.
What is video analytics?
Video analytics is a relatively new phenomenon in the marketplace. Advances in technology have allowed cameras to be “intelligent”. This means the camera itself has the capability of sensing an intruder and alerting only when and if there is a violation. Advanced systems can even differentiate between animals, objects and people to minimize the false alarm rate. In addition, these can provide a “virtual fence” so that physical barriers may not even be necessary. Or, they can enhance detection where physical barriers are in place.
What are the costs for a comprehensive design?
Costs can vary greatly, but are relative based on the time and effort required to get the optimum design. If CAD drawings, RFQ and RFPs have to be issued, this too can add to the time. Travel and per diem costs are paid by the client and are reflected in actual pass through costs.
Can I just use a standard design?
Vendors offer a valuable service and their products are what drive systems in this high technology world, but they are very subjective. Only a true consultant can offer a design that does not favor a vendor’s products. Rather, the consultant offers the best design based on years of experience. Once the design is complete, then the owner can solicit proposals that meet the specifications. The consultant and end user can then review the proposals and agree on the exact equipment. This is the truest means in which to implement the correct system for each unique situation.
Can I record conversations and images of anyone I suspect of wrongdoing?
State laws vary greatly on this. Some states are called “single party” and some are “dual party”. Recording someone without their knowledge can also be a federal offense and can lead to many issues. All laws are followed to the letter. No investigator will risk his or her ability to practice for a single client’s demands. We can offer consultation in this area as well. We are proficient in all state laws as they relate to video and audio surveillance.
Once a system is designed, who installs the systems proposed?
System installation is typically the work of licensed Systems Integrators; sometimes called SIs. Another frequent term is Value Added Reseller (VAR). These folks know, and are efficient in deploying low voltage systems. The customer (also called an End User) receives the benefit of getting the best price once the system is envisioned. The final design permits the customer to truly be able to compare “apples to apples” from each supplier and determine which company meets their expectations and budget needs.
What will the future of security systems look like?
It is our opinion that we are watching a very unique time in communications technology. The proliferation of mobile devices and strength of wireless systems will benefit the security world as well. The desire to be truly mobile and check on those people and items that are valuable to us is leading a technology revolution unlike anything witnessed in history. As this technology gets faster and takes up less physical space, people will experience solutions that allow them to relax, yet be aware that they are in constant contact with the things that are most important. If someone chooses not to be so involved, third party monitoring companies will offer a valuable service with a constant picture of both data and video information. We will also see services that can monitor the vital signs of the elderly, and alert us if there is a health issue. Proper sensors will tell us if the person is active and whether they have taken their medications for example. At a computer or mobile PDA, we can “check in” on them to see if they need assistance. For those who do not wish to be in a nursing home, this is the only solution that permits the family members to have piece of mind, yet let our loved ones remain at home.
